Introduction

Dear FNO Trial User,

I'm Jonathan Earle, founder and principal developer of Atlast! Solutions' File Notes Organizer. I'm writing to invite you to download our newest offering FNO3.3. The new Trial version will allow you to experience the full toolset for 30 days and will update your earlier installation to FNO3.3's Lite version at the conclusion of the Trial period should you decide Lite is enough for your present FNO needs.

FNO3.3 introduces...

  • full text search
  • adds new layouts and examples
  • adds filters, 'does not contain' [-] and 'exactly equals' [=]
  • plus many code improvements that allow FNO to take advantage of recent hardware and OS improvements.

FNO3.4 development is underway. We expect to add some wonderful new tools in FNO3.4, and want to include your requested upgrade items too, so please write to me through the File Notes Forum or the 'Get In Touch' web site link with your thoughts and requests.

New and almost new FNO 3.3 features
(tips)

Full Text Search is the centerpiece of this release. Here are a few tips to get you started and a few more to acquaint you with FNO3.3's automatic FNO Note making, using the text highlighter and TOC [Table of Contents] menu features.

Firstly, if you have created any custom layouts, the new menu items may not show up after updating to FNO3.3. Go to the Notes menu and look for the drop down item'Add Full Text Notes'. If you see it, your install is complete... if not use the 'Reset Toolbars' tool
View » Toolbars » Reset Toolbars
or recreate your layouts by customizing one of the standard templates provided. Once the 'Add Full Text Notes' item appears in the Notes menu, you're ready to begin creating indexes for any or all of your folders containing text files.

"begin creating full text search indexes for any or all of your folders containing text files"
Begin by creating an index for just one folder. You'll need to tell the system how many characters should be indexed for each file. The maximum setting is 99,999 which indexes about 70 double spaced text pages. If you need to index larger files, you'll need to select each file manually by right clicking on it and selecting create an index. Indexing a large folder will take some time. When the blue progress bar disappears, you'll be ready to begin your first full text search.

Start a search by using the filter to find matching files. Remember that the filter now allows [-] 'does not contain' and [=] 'exact word' search elements. When the match list appears, select the first file and use the viewer search 'next' button to drive to the next occurrence of a word or phrase.

Text to table of contents [TOC] bookmarks
Remember, text can be highlighted and saved to a note or series of bookmark notes using the 'Make TOC bookmark from Annotations' feature. It works for all pure text file types. PDF is not pure text so you will still have to capture PDF text to the clipboard and drop it into a note. But look at the 'Make TOC' on the viewer drop down menu . It is wonderful for lightning fast captures and bookmark creation.

Future features
- great things happen when you ask

FNO's 'My Organizer' features came about because of users' suggestions. One asked why FNO notes had to start with a folder file and suggested that he would like to make notes that were not tied to any particular file.. to do notes and phone notes for instance. We added that in FNO3.1.

"Gary Ford asked if he could attach files to these notes...FNO3.2 added Gary's Attachment Bar suggestion"
Next, Gary Ford asked if he could attach files to these notes. He wanted to make a note on his to do list reminding him to order materials for a project, check it off when the order was placed, and attach the invoice to the note when it arrived in the mail. FNO3.2 added Gary's Attachment Bar suggestion. I might add that if he places the invoice amount in the index column, he can keep track of project costs because FNO's sum column capability will automatically total to the bottom status bar area for index and any other column dedicated to number entries. Download our PDF Manual, it is all there.

Because of these two requests, FNO added powerful database tools allowing project, notes, calendar, to do list, time lines and just about any other data to be organized and managed.

You can see the evolution of the request and response if you download our Forum download file and look for Gary Ford's 'look and feel' comments. Thanks Gary!

Download users manual, table of contents and index
Finally, we've created a PDF User Manual with great PDF bookmarks, printable Table of Contents and an Index -- all in Acrobat 6.01 format. Download the files, print them if you like, and take a tour through the highlighted Bookmark or TOC items. FNO has many features that will come alive for you as you view the screen shots, charts and walk-throughs contained in our 185 page manual.

Please write to tell us of your experiences and to detail your feature requests. We love praise but probably learn more from critical comments, so fire away.

Special pricing

Our promise and request
Thank you for your past support. I want to assure you that we will continue our efforts to improve FNO along the path that best meets your needs. Please join us on the Forum or by emailing me through 'Get in Touch' with your requests, comments and suggestions.

Finally, if you find FNO valuable, please consider telling your friends and colleagues about us and your experiences with FNO.
